The American Ultra series takes the American Elites of yore and swaps out the Tele Thinline for a Jazzmaster. Of all Fender production models, only this and the Mexican-built Deluxe line are fitted with hum-cancelling pickups. As the name states, the Noiseless Hot Stratocaster includes more copper windings around its magnet, which provides more oomph and bite. Each has its own theme and style. The Elite had some great switching options, but it was actually difficult to remember what they were, so here we’re trying to make it more user-friendly, more intuitive. The Ultras represent the most modernist vision, with their obvious refinements, yet still feel and sound very ‘Fender’, stopping short of features such as stainless steel frets or roasted maple necks and the like. Has Fender Finally created a noiseless pickup that can keep up with a TRUE single coil? Reduced S-1 switching options on the Strat. And with its compound-radius neck, noiseless pickups, phase- and parallel-switching options, and new body carves, the Ultra might soon be as revered as the Plus, Deluxe, and Elite models that marked important evolutions of the Tele and Strat. The heavy-mass bridge is a welcomed feature for those of us who have long enjoyed Badass-style bridges, as are Fender’s Ultra Noiseless pickups, which provide vintage tones without the traditional hum associated with them. • Controls: 3-position pickup selector switch, master volume control (with S-1 switch and treble bleed) and master no-load tone These pickups are very well-balanced, articulate (even with a lot of gain), and very much convey that classic strat tone we all know and love. The new noiseless pickups outclass all other attempts to bring heat with cool with the touch of a knob. It's not easy deciding which is best for you, and often the price is not an issue. In fact, there’s quite a refined lightness to the Strat’s voice with the lower mids cleaned up a little. Taking Fender’s “Noiseless” design to new heights, the ‘Ultra Noiseless’ pickups found in the American Ultra models promise classic yet versatile tones – without any hum! Perhaps 60-cycle hum isn’t such a huge problem for most. • Hardware: Nickel/chromed-plated American Tele bridge with 6 chromed brass saddle, bone nut, Fender Deluxe rear-locking tuners All include the same molded cases we’ve seen with the American Professional range. The Elite added many improvements: a new neck profile and a contoured heel; a compound radius fingerboard; fourth generation Noiseless pickups; truss rod adjustment wheel; S-1 switching; soft-touch knobs; and short-post locking tuners with a modern two-post vibrato. The combination of very good weights here, a neck heel that disappears and more subtle features such as the improved intonation of the Tele’s bridge, the hum-free pickups, sensible expanded switching and well-voiced control circuits means that there’s very little to get in the way of creating the music you want to. It’s certainly not a problem here and comparing to standard singlecoils, yes, they work. Many of us will be familiar with the four-way Tele selector switch, which does the same, but on this model the three-way feels more familiar and simply depressing that S-1 switch feels a little more intuitive. Perhaps the most notable change is the body shaping in the heel area. Another note to modernism here is the Electrosocket jack mount, which is side-placed as usual. Using the Hot Noiseless pickup design for the neck will give you warm, charming and punchy tone with a bluesy feel all over it. These are a little more expensive than the American Elites.
